Shin Megami Tensei Trading Card: Card Summoner came out for the Game Boy Color in 2001, developed and published by Atlus. It was a time when the handheld was full of experimental titles, and this was one of the more obscure ones, a spin-off that tried to translate the series' demon recruitment into a card battling format. You don't hear much about it, but it has a dedicated following.

You control a summoner navigating a grid-based world, screen by screen, to advance the story. Your main goal is to build a powerful deck by winning card battles against other summoners and wild demons. The signature mechanics involve fusing cards you collect to create new, stronger monster cards, and using a rock-paper-scissors style elemental system during combat to exploit weaknesses. The pacing is deliberate, with a fair amount of grinding required to get the cards you need for fusion. It feels like a methodical puzzle, constantly weighing which demons to keep, which to fuse, and how to build a deck that can handle the next challenge.
