Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children - Aka no Sho is one of those weird, early 2000s Game Boy Color RPGs that never made it outside Japan—which is a shame, because it’s actually a pretty solid monster-collecting game with that classic SMT vibe. You start off as a kid who can suddenly see demons everywhere, and before long, you’re recruiting them to fight in turn-based battles that feel like a lighter version of mainline Megaten.

The demon designs are great (some creepy, some goofy), and fusing them to make stronger ones is addictive. It’s not as punishing as, say, Nocturne, but there’s still enough strategy to keep you on your toes. The red/black color palette gives it a distinct look, though the GBC hardware means everything’s a little cramped. If you’re into old-school monster RPGs with a dark twist, this one’s worth digging up.
