I picked up Shark Tale for the Game Boy Advance back when it was new, a game from the era where nearly every animated movie got a companion title. Activision published it, and it landed on the handheld alongside many other licensed platformers. It was just part of the landscape then, another game to try if you enjoyed the film.

You control Oscar, a small fish with big ambitions, navigating through underwater levels. The main goal is to rise from the bottom of the reef to become a somebody, which involves swimming through side scrolling stages, avoiding predators like sharks and jellyfish, and collecting shells that serve as the game's currency. You can perform a spin attack to fend off smaller enemies and use a special sonar burst to temporarily stun larger threats. The levels are fairly linear, asking you to move from left to right while managing your oxygen meter; the pacing is quick, but some enemy patterns can feel cheap, leading to occasional frustration. Playing it feels like a straightforward dash through a colorful, sometimes hazardous, underwater neighborhood.
