About Shamus
Shamus came out for the Game Boy Color in 1992, published by Atari Corporation. It was part of that wave of games trying to bring a more complex, exploratory feel to the handheld, a time when you were happy to find anything that wasn't a simple platformer or puzzle game on the small screen. It felt like a serious attempt to fit a bigger adventure into your pocket.
You control a small, robotic character navigating a series of single screen rooms that form a large maze. Your main goal is to find a key in each level to unlock the exit, but the real challenge comes from the patrolling enemies and the need to map the layout in your head. Signature mechanics include blasting enemies with your laser, which can temporarily stun them, and collecting power ups that increase your fire rate or grant temporary invincibility. The pacing is deliberate; you often have to wait for the right moment to move past a guard or backtrack through cleared areas. It feels like a tense game of cat and mouse where a single mistake can send you back to the start of the stage.
