About Scorched Earth

Scorched Earth is an artillery combat game released in 1991 for the MS-DOS platform. The game presents a side view of a battlefield and operates in a turn-based structure, where players control tanks positioned on a hilly, destructible landscape. The objective is to eliminate all opposing tanks through calculated projectile fire.

Players take turns controlling a single tank, adjusting the angle and power of their cannon shot while accounting for environmental factors like wind. Each round begins with a phase where players can spend in-game currency to purchase various weapons, along with optional defensive items like shields or parachutes to mitigate damage or survive falls. The core gameplay involves predicting projectile trajectories to land hits on enemy tanks, with the terrain deforming from explosions, altering the tactical landscape for subsequent turns. Players manage a limited arsenal of weapons, which include standard explosive shells, area-effect bombs, and specialized munitions like napalm or dirt bombs that can bury targets.

Progression occurs through successive rounds against either computer-controlled opponents or other human players, with support for up to ten participants. The game features a variety of weapon types, each with distinct blast patterns and effects on the terrain. Textual messages are displayed during play, such as taunts before firing or announcements upon a tank's destruction. These text elements can be modified by the user through editing game files, allowing for personalized exchanges.
