I first played Sangokushi on the Game Boy Advance back in 2002, a time when handhelds were really coming into their own. It was developed by Koei, a company known for its historical strategy games. This was one of their more ambitious titles for the GBA, bringing a complex, turn based experience to a small screen.

In the game, you control a faction leader from the Three Kingdoms period, like Cao Cao or Liu Bei, and your goal is to unify China through a mix of diplomacy, resource management, and military campaigns. You spend your turns moving armies across a map of China, managing your cities, and engaging in battles that play out on a separate tactical grid. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, as you balance your gold and food supplies while negotiating with rival factions. It feels like a grand, portable chess game where every decision carries weight.
