Samurai Deeper Kyo came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, published by Bandai. It was part of that wave of games adapting anime and manga directly for the handheld, a pretty common sight on the system. You step into the sandals of Kyoshiro, a wandering medicine seller whose body is also home to the feared demon eyes assassin, Kyo. The story picks up from the manga, throwing you into a feudal Japan filled with supernatural threats.

You control Kyoshiro as he moves through side scrolling environments, screen by screen, slashing at enemies with his sword. The main goal is to advance through the story driven stages, which often function like linear dungeons, and defeat the bosses waiting at the end. A key mechanic is the ability to switch between Kyoshiro and the more powerful Kyo during combat, each with their own move sets and special attacks. You also collect and use various items to restore health or solve minor environmental puzzles. The pacing is fairly straightforward, though some enemy encounters can be surprisingly tough, demanding quick reflexes to avoid damage. It feels like a solid, action focused adaptation that captures the feel of its source material through straightforward combat and exploration.
