I picked up Sakura Taisen GB2: Thunderbolt Sakusen when it came out for the Game Boy Color in 2000. It was developed by Sega and released during that period when developers were really pushing what the handheld could do, moving beyond simple ports to create more ambitious titles. You control a squad of characters from the Imperial Combat Revue's Flower Division, moving them on grid based maps to engage enemy steam powered robots. The main objective is to complete various military missions across a series of turn based battles. Signature mechanics include positioning your units to execute combination attacks and a relationship system where dialogue choices between battles can influence your combat performance. The pacing is deliberate, requiring careful thought for each move, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you rush in. Playing it feels like solving a tense, interactive puzzle with a cast of characters you grow to know.
