I picked up SSX Tricky for the Game Boy Advance back when it came out, a portable version of the bigger console game. EA Sports BIG published it, and it was one of those attempts to bring a flashy, arcade sports title to the handheld. It arrived during a time when the GBA library was filling up with all sorts of adaptations, from racers to platformers, and this was its entry into the snowboarding scene.

You control a snowboarder racing down chaotic, exaggerated mountain courses. The main goal is straightforward: finish first in races or score the most points in trick competitions. Your main tools are the trick system, where you build up a "Uber" meter by linking spins and grabs; filling this meter lets you unleash a signature, over-the-top trick. You also have to manage your boost, earned from landing tricks well, to maintain speed on the slopes. The game moves fast, and the courses are packed with narrow paths and huge jumps that demand quick reflexes. It feels like a constant, frantic balance between risking a big trick for more boost and simply staying on your feet to cross the finish line. Pulling off a long combo and then blazing past rivals on a final straightaway gives a genuine rush of satisfaction.
