About Rogue
Rogue is a turn-based fantasy role-playing game released in 1984 for MS-DOS. Developed and published by Artificial Intelligence Design, the game presents a top-down view of a dungeon using ASCII character graphics. The player's objective is to guide an adventurer through a multi-level labyrinth known as the Dungeon of Doom.
The player controls a single character who begins on the top floor and must descend through the dungeon. The primary goal is to locate and retrieve a specific artifact, the Amulet of Yendor, and then escape the dungeon alive. Progression involves navigating through a series of interconnected rooms and corridors on each level, with the layout and placement of items being randomly generated for each new attempt. The game world, including monsters and treasures, is represented entirely by letters and symbols on the screen.
Gameplay systems include tactical combat against a variety of monsters, each denoted by a unique letter and possessing different abilities. The player character can find and equip various weapons and armor to improve their capabilities, and they gain experience points to increase their power level. As the adventurer descends, the dungeon levels become more complex and the enemies encountered grow stronger. If the player's character is defeated, the game ends permanently and a new session with a freshly generated dungeon must be started.
