About Rocket Power - Gettin' Air
I remember picking up Rocket Power: Gettin' Air for the Game Boy Color back in 2001. It was published by THQ, a company that put out a lot of licensed games for kids during that era. This one was based on the Nickelodeon cartoon, and it fit right in with the other portable titles you'd find next to the register at the store.
In the game, you control Otto Rocket, and the main goal is to win a big extreme sports competition. You do this by skating through levels, performing tricks to build up your special meter. The signature mechanics are grinding on rails and pulling off mid-air tricks like grabs and flips. The levels are linear, and you have to avoid obstacles and keep your speed up. It can get a bit repetitive after a while, but landing a big combo string feels satisfying. The game captures that quick, arcade-style feel of trying to nail a run without wiping out.
