Robopon Sun came out for the Game Boy Color in 1999, developed by Hudson Soft. It was part of that wave of late 90s portable games where collecting and battling creatures was a popular idea. You played as a kid who gets a robotic partner, setting off on a journey across a world filled with other people and their own mechanical companions.

You control a young hero exploring the world screen by screen, talking to townsfolk and venturing into dungeons. Your main goal is to find and befriend various Robopon, which you then train and use in turn based battles. A key mechanic is the ring system, where you connect Robopon to upgrade their abilities and teach them new skills. The game moves at a steady pace, though some of the later dungeons can feel challenging with their maze like layouts and stronger enemy encounters. It feels like a methodical and sometimes grindy adventure, but there is a real satisfaction in assembling a powerful team from the parts you find and trade.
