Road Champs came out for the Game Boy Color in 2000, developed by Vivid Image and published by Midway. It was part of that wave of late-era Game Boy Color titles that tried to squeeze more out of the hardware before the Advance arrived. You got a lot of racing games then, but this one had a specific, almost toy-like focus on monster trucks and stunt driving that set it apart from the more straightforward racers.

You control a monster truck driver, and the main goal is to win a series of racing and stunt events across different cups. The racing happens on short, twisting tracks where you have to manage your speed and use your truck's high suspension to handle jumps and rough terrain. The stunt mode is the real signature, though; you drive onto a screen filled with ramps and platforms, trying to chain together flips and land cleanly for points. The game can be unforgiving, with precise landings required to avoid crashing and losing momentum. It feels like a mix of careful planning and chaotic improvisation as you try to string a combo together without wiping out.
