About Return Of The Ninja (europe)
Return of the Ninja for the Game Boy Color came out in 2000, developed by Konami. It was part of that late era for the handheld, when developers were really pushing what the hardware could do visually. You step into the role of a ninja on a mission to rescue a kidnapped princess from a rival clan. The game is structured as a side scrolling action platformer, moving through forests, castles, and enemy fortresses.
You control the ninja directly, running, jumping, and using a katana to slash through a variety of foes. Your main goal is to fight your way to the end of each stage and defeat the boss waiting there. Two of your key tools are the shurikens for ranged attacks and a double jump that is essential for navigating the platforms. The levels are challenging, demanding precise timing to avoid enemy attacks and environmental hazards. It feels tense and deliberate, where a single mistake can cost you a life.
