About Resident Evil (prototype)
I first came across the Resident Evil prototype for Game Boy Color through old gaming forums. It was developed by Capcom around 1999, but never officially released. This was during a time when handhelds were pushing into 3D, but many developers still worked within the limits of 2D. The game was an attempt to bring survival horror to a pocket sized screen.
You control a character exploring a mansion, moving screen by screen. Your main goal is to uncover the secrets of the outbreak and survive. The gameplay involves managing limited ammunition, solving environmental puzzles, and fighting zombies. The fixed perspective and tight resource control create a constant tension. It feels like a condensed, tense version of the classic Resident Evil formula.
