Resident Evil Gaiden on Game Boy Color is one of those weird little spin-offs that shouldn’t work but somehow does. You’re stuck on a creepy cruise ship—because of course you are—fighting zombies with this odd hybrid of turn-based combat and real-time dodging. The first time a lurching enemy shambles into view and you fumble the timing on your shots? Yeah, that’ll get your heart racing.
The graphics are about what you’d expect from a GBC horror game (lots of pixelated blood and dimly lit corridors), but the atmosphere is surprisingly tense. There’s something unnerving about hearing those tinny Game Boy sound effects while you’re low on ammo and trying to solve a puzzle before something finds you. It’s janky in places, but if you’re into offbeat survival horror, this one’s a neat curiosity.
Just don’t expect it to play like the mainline games—this is its own weird, experimental thing.
