Rayman Advance came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2001, published by Ubisoft. It was one of the early platformers on the system, arriving when developers were figuring out how to bring console-style games to a handheld. This was a direct port of the original 1995 Rayman, so it had that particular mid-90s design sensibility, just shrunk down to fit in your pocket.

You control Rayman, a limbless character who runs, jumps, and punches his way through a series of vibrant, side-scrolling levels. Your main goal is to free the Electoons, small creatures imprisoned by the villain Mr. Dark, and ultimately defeat him. The game is structured screen by screen; you explore each area thoroughly, often backtracking after gaining a new ability like the power to swing from ledges or throw a charged fist. Collecting a certain number of Electoons unlocks the boss fights at the end of each world. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is notoriously unforgiving, demanding precise jumps and careful enemy timing. Playing it feels like navigating a beautiful, sometimes frustrating, obstacle course where every successful maneuver is a small victory.
