I picked up R-Type III on Game Boy Advance when it came out in 2000, a time when the handheld was just getting started. You pilot the R-9 spacecraft through a series of horizontally scrolling stages, each filled with intricate enemy patterns and massive bosses. Your main objective is to survive the relentless assault, clearing each stage by destroying everything in your path. Two mechanics define the experience: the Force pod, a detachable unit you can position in front or behind your ship to block shots and amplify your own firepower, and the charge shot system, which lets you unleash a powerful beam after holding down the fire button. The game is notoriously difficult, demanding precise movement and memorization of enemy placements. Navigating the tight corridors while managing your Force pod creates a tense, strategic rhythm. It feels like a constant, demanding puzzle set to a backdrop of explosions and laser fire.
