I picked up R-Type DX for the Game Boy Color back in 1999, a compilation from Irem that bundled the first two games in the series with a color overhaul. It was a solid release for its time, a way to experience these particular shooters on a handheld when that was still a novelty. The package gave you both the original R-Type and its sequel, R-Type II, which was a decent amount of content for a cartridge.

You pilot the R-9 spacecraft through side-scrolling stages filled with alien forces. Your main goal is simply to survive each level and defeat the boss waiting at the end. The core mechanics are what define the experience. You have a standard forward shot, but the real strategy comes from your Force, a detachable orb that can be positioned in front of or behind your ship to block enemy fire and deliver a more powerful, concentrated attack. You also collect power-ups that change your main weapon, like wave beams or homing lasers, and you need to decide which configuration works best for the coming screen. The game is notoriously difficult; it demands precise movement and memorization of enemy patterns because a single hit means you lose your power-ups and become significantly weaker. Navigating the tight corridors and overwhelming enemy formations creates a tense, methodical pace where every shot and placement of your Force matters. It feels like a constant, engaging puzzle set against a relentless assault.
