About Puyo Pop (u)(mode7)
I picked up Puyo Pop for the Game Boy Advance back in 2002, a Sega release that fit right in with the platform's library of quick, portable puzzle games. It was developed by Sonic Team, which made sense given their history with colorful, fast-paced titles. During that era, having a solid puzzle game in your pocket was essential, and this one delivered exactly that without a lot of fuss.
You control the falling pairs of colored blobs, called Puyos, rotating and sliding them into place. The main goal is to create chains by matching four or more of the same color, which then pop and send nuisance Puyos over to your opponent's screen. The signature mechanics involve setting up these chain reactions; you plan several moves ahead, often creating large combos that can overwhelm the other side in seconds. Another key element is the offset system, where you can counter incoming garbage Puyos by triggering your own chains, turning a defensive move into an attack. The pacing is relentless, especially against the computer on higher difficulties, demanding quick decisions and spatial awareness. It feels like a constant, satisfying mental tug-of-war where a single mistake can turn the tables completely.
