About Puyo Pop (e)(batman)
I picked up Puyo Pop on the Game Boy Advance back in 2003, a time when the handheld was full of quick, colorful puzzle games. It was developed by Sonic Team and published by THQ, fitting right in with that era's focus on portable, competitive play. This wasn't a complex RPG or an action platformer; it was a game you could play in short bursts, perfect for the system.
You control a cursor to manipulate pairs of colored blobs, called Puyos, as they fall from the top of the screen. The main objective is to clear your own screen by linking four or more same-colored Puyos together while simultaneously sending garbage blocks to your opponent's side. The signature mechanics involve setting up chain reactions, where one group's disappearance causes another to pop, and offsetting incoming garbage by quickly clearing your own Puyos. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty ramps up significantly as you face more clever AI opponents or a friend in versus mode. It feels frantic and satisfying when you finally set off a massive chain that overwhelms the other side.
