About Pop'n Music - Animation Melody (japan)
Konami released Pop'n Music GB: Animation Melody for the Game Boy Color in 2000. It was part of a wave of rhythm games adapted for handhelds, bringing a specific flavor of Japanese arcade music to a portable screen.
You control the cursor that follows a track of falling notes, pressing the Left, Up, Right, A, and B buttons in time with the music. The main objective is to complete songs from various anime series, like Dragon Ball Z and Galaxy Express 999, by hitting the correct sequence of notes. Two signature mechanics are the five-button layout, which makes the complex patterns manageable on the Game Boy's limited controls, and the on-screen display of song lyrics in Japanese, which adds to the authentic feel even if you cannot read them. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty ramps up significantly in later stages, demanding quick reflexes and memorization. It feels surprisingly responsive and engaging for a handheld rhythm game from that era.
