About Pocket Puyo Puyo 4
Pocket Puyo Puyo 4 came out for the Game Boy Color in 1999, developed by Compile. It was one of the many puzzle games you could carry around in your pocket during that era, a time when the Game Boy's greenish screen was a familiar sight on school buses and in waiting rooms. This particular entry was part of a long running series, offering a portable version of its falling block chaos.
You control the falling pairs of colored blobs, called Puyos, rotating and placing them to create chains. The main objective is to outlast your opponent by sending nuisance Puyos to their screen, either in the story mode against a cast of characters or in a direct two player link cable match. Its signature mechanics include the All Clear, which wipes the entire board for a massive counterattack, and the Fever mode that gives you pre set chains to trigger for a rapid comeback. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty ramps up quickly against clever computer opponents who build complex chains. It feels like a constant, delightful scramble to set up your own big combo before you get buried.
