About Pocket Billiards : Funk The 9 Ball (english Translation)
I picked up Pocket Billiards: Funk The 9 Ball on the Game Boy Color back when it came out. It was a 2000 release from a developer called Natsume, I think. At the time, the Game Boy Color library was full of arcade style sports games, and this one was their take on pool. It wasn't trying to be a flashy 3D experience; it was just a straightforward pocket billiards game you could take anywhere.
You control the cue stick, aiming and setting the power for each shot. The main goal is to clear the table by pocketing all the balls, following standard 9 ball rules where you must hit the lowest numbered ball first. Two mechanics stand out: the ability to apply English, putting spin on the cue ball to control its path after contact, and a precise power meter that requires a steady thumb to avoid scratching or a weak shot. The game moves at a deliberate pace, and the physics demand careful planning, especially on the smaller tables. It feels satisfying to sink a difficult combination shot after lining it up just right.
