I remember picking up the Play-Yan for my Game Boy Advance back in 2005. It wasn't a game, but a special cartridge from Nintendo that turned the handheld into a media player. This was before smartphones were common, so having a way to play MP3s and MPEG-4 videos on the GBA felt like a clever, if slightly awkward, piece of tech. You needed specific adapters for SD or MiniSD cards to load your files, which made the whole setup a bit of a project.

You navigate the Play-Yan's menu with the D-pad to select your music or video files from the memory card. The main objective is simply to play your media; there are no scores or levels. Signature mechanics include creating playlists for your music and, for videos, dealing with the GBA's small, non-backlit screen which made watching anything a very intimate, squint-heavy experience. The device itself was not particularly fast, and loading files could feel sluggish. Using the Play-Yan was a novelty that highlighted the limitations and charm of portable tech from that era.
