I picked up Planet of the Apes for the Game Boy Advance back in 2001, a Ubisoft release that came out when the handheld was full of movie tie-ins. It was a time when you could expect a portable version of a console game to be its own distinct thing, and this one definitely carved its own path separate from the versions on other systems.

You control Ulysses, a human astronaut, navigating through side scrolling levels filled with hostile apes. Your main goal is to survive and find a way off the planet, which involves moving screen by screen through jungles and caverns. You use a sword for close combat and a bow for picking off enemies at a distance, switching between them as the situation demands. The game can be quite difficult, with precise platforming required and enemies that hit hard. It feels like a methodical crawl through a hostile world where every new screen demands your full attention.
