Okay, so Planet of the Apes on GBC is way more interesting than I expected for a Game Boy Color movie tie-in. You start off as this human astronaut (of course) crash-landed in a world where apes run everything, and right away you’re sneaking past gorilla patrols and solving these weird little environmental puzzles. The pixel art actually nails that eerie, overgrown ruin vibe from the movies.
Gameplay’s a mix of stealth and light platforming—think more Metal Gear Solid than Mario, which was a surprise. The first time a gorilla spotted me, I panicked and mashed buttons until I figured out you’re supposed to hide in bushes or climb vines. There’s even this tense bit early on where you have to distract guards by throwing rocks. Not bad for a tiny cartridge.
It’s janky in that classic GBC way (good luck with the jumping physics), but if you’re into retro stuff or just love the franchise, it’s a weird little time capsule. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand.
