I picked up Planet of the Apes on Game Boy Advance when it came out; it was a 2001 release from Ubisoft. This was during a time when licensed games were everywhere on the GBA, often trying to capture the feel of a movie in a portable format. You control an ape named Ubin, and your goal is to rescue a human child while navigating a hostile world. The game is a side scrolling action platformer where you move through levels screen by screen. Your main tools are a spear for close combat and a bow for hitting distant enemies or switches. You also do a fair amount of climbing and jumping across platforms, with some light puzzle solving involving lever pulling. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be sharp, especially with precise platforming required in later stages. Playing it feels like a careful, methodical trek through a dangerous wilderness.
