About Pitfall
Activision released Pitfall for the Game Boy Color in 1998, a time when handheld games were becoming more ambitious. This version was a side scrolling adventure that felt distinct from the original's blocky, single screen challenges. It fit right in with the platformers and action games that defined the system's library.
You control Harry Jr., the son of the original adventurer, navigating through jungles, caves, and ancient ruins. Your goal is to rescue your father and recover a stolen artifact. The game plays out screen by screen, with you running, jumping over pits, and swinging on vines. You fight enemies like bats and spiders using a whip, and you also collect gems and power ups to help you along. The pacing is deliberate, requiring careful jumps and some backtracking, and the difficulty can be unforgiving with instant death traps. It feels like a methodical trek through a dangerous, interconnected world.
