I picked up the Phantasy Star Collection for Game Boy Advance, a compilation of the first three Sega Master System and Genesis RPGs. It was a straightforward re-release, a way to play these older games on a handheld without any major new features. You control a party of adventurers, moving them across a world map and through towns and dungeons. The main goal is to follow a linear story, defeating a great evil by exploring dungeons, fighting random encounters, and upgrading your gear. Signature mechanics include first-person dungeon crawling, where you navigate maze-like corridors one step at a time, and a turn-based combat system where you input commands for each party member. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, especially in the early titles where resources are scarce.
