About Pokemon Pearl Version (v1.13) (eu)
Pokemon Pearl Version came out in 2007 for the Nintendo DS, developed by Game Freak. It was part of that era where the dual screens and touch input started to feel normal, and for a lot of us, it was the first time we saw Pokemon in a fully 3D overworld, even if the characters were still sprites. It felt like a solid step forward on the hardware.
You play as a kid from a small town, and your goal is to travel across the Sinnoh region, catching Pokemon, battling eight Gym Leaders, and eventually challenging the Elite Four. The core loop involves exploring routes and caves screen by screen, managing a team of six Pokemon, and using their moves in turn-based fights. Two big mechanics for this version were the Poketch, a multi-function app on the lower screen for tracking things like your Pokemon's friendship, and the Underground, where you could dig for fossils and set up a secret base. The pacing is deliberate; it's not a fast game, and some of the late-game areas require a fair bit of level grinding. At its heart, it's a game about building a team and slowly making your way to the top, and that process of raising your Pokemon from scratch is what makes it satisfying.
