Nushi Tsuri Adventure is one of those weird little Game Boy Color gems that never left Japan—which is a shame, because it’s basically Pokémon but with fishing. You wander around catching bizarre fish-creatures (some look like angry turnips, others are just… blobs with eyes), train them up, and then pit them against other anglers’ monsters in turn-based battles. The pixel art’s surprisingly charming, especially when your derpy fish-thing flops around mid-fight.
At first I thought it’d be super simple, but there’s actually some strategy—different lures work better in certain spots, and some fish evolve into way cooler forms if you level them right. The menus are all in Japanese, though, so expect a lot of trial-and-error unless you’re using a guide. Still, half the fun is accidentally teaching your fish monster a completely useless move and rolling with it.
If you’ve ever wanted to throw a sentient squid at a floating watermelon, this is your game.
