I picked up The New Batman Adventures: Chaos in Gotham for the Game Boy Color back in 2001. It was published by Kemco, one of those many licensed games that filled the portable library during that era. You could always count on finding a Batman game for your handheld, and this was the one that tied into the animated series I watched after school.

You control Batman through a series of side-scrolling levels, moving screen by screen to clear out the Joker's gang. Your main goal is to stop the Joker from poisoning Gotham's water supply. You punch and kick your way through thugs, and you can also use a limited supply of batarangs to hit enemies from a distance. The levels are linear but require some searching for keys to unlock doors, which breaks up the straightforward combat. The pacing is quick, and the difficulty can spike with certain enemy placements, making you pay attention to your health bar. It feels like a straightforward brawler that captures the simple action of the cartoon.
