About Mr. Driller (japan)
Mr. Driller came out for the Game Boy Color in 2000, published by Namco. It was part of that wave of puzzle games that felt perfectly suited for a handheld, something you could pick up and play in short bursts. The premise was simple but immediately engaging, a direct and colorful challenge.
You control Susumu, the Mr. Driller himself, as he drills downward through a massive stack of colored blocks. Your goal is to reach a specific depth before your air supply runs out. The core mechanics involve matching four or more blocks of the same color to make them disappear, which clears your path while also managing the blocks above from collapsing on you. You constantly monitor your air gauge, collecting air capsules to stay alive while avoiding falling debris. The game starts calmly but the pressure builds quickly as the blocks descend faster and your oxygen ticks down. It creates a tense, almost frantic rhythm of digging and dodging that is surprisingly hard to put down.
