Mother 3 is one of those games that sticks with you—like, years later you'll still catch yourself humming the soundtrack or thinking about that one scene. It starts off deceptively simple: you're Lucas, a quiet kid in a weirdly charming little village where nothing much happens... until the Pig Army rolls in and turns everything upside down.
The combat's got this rhythm-based twist where timing your button presses right makes attacks hit harder, which sounds gimmicky but actually feels great once you get the hang of it. And the writing? It's equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking—one minute you're laughing at a talking pile of dung, the next you're emotionally wrecked by some random NPC's three lines of dialogue.
It never officially made it outside Japan, but the fan translation is so well done you'd swear it was official. Just bring tissues.
