Mortal Kombat Advance came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2001, developed by Midway Games. It was part of that early wave of trying to bring a full fighting game experience to a handheld. You control one of several fighters, like Scorpion or Sub-Zero, navigating a series of side-scrolling levels. Your main goal is to fight through these stages, defeating enemies and occasional sub-bosses, to reach the final confrontation. The game mixes standard one-on-one fights from the arcade with exploration; you move screen by screen, sometimes finding hidden areas or items. Signature mechanics include using your character's special moves, like Scorpion's spear, and performing fatalities when you win a match. The pacing can feel slow because the exploration parts are simple and the enemy encounters are frequent. It feels like a stripped-down version of the console games, a portable experiment that captures the basic moves but loses some of the speed and impact.
