Mortal Kombat 4 came out for the Game Boy Color in 1999, developed by Eurocom and published by Midway Games. It was part of that wave of fighting games trying to squeeze arcade action onto a handheld screen. You pick a fighter from the roster and battle through a series of one-on-one matches. The main goal is to defeat each opponent in the tournament, leading up to the final boss. Signature mechanics include performing special moves, like Sub-Zero's ice blast, and using weapons that randomly appear during fights. The game also features fatalities, the finishing moves you input at the end to defeat your opponent in a gruesome way. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, especially against later computer opponents. It feels like a condensed, sometimes janky, but always earnest attempt to bring a console experience into your hands.
