About Montezuma's Return
Montezuma's Return came out for the Game Boy Color in 1998, published by Telegames. It was part of that wave of isometric platformers on the system, games that tried to create a sense of depth on a small screen. This one was a late entry in a series that started on older computers, but on the GBC it felt like a specific kind of challenge.
You control an explorer navigating trap filled Aztec ruins. Your main goal is to find the keys that unlock the exit on each level. The gameplay is built on screen by screen exploration; you jump across moving platforms, avoid spikes and boulders, and use a limited supply of ropes to climb. Combat is simple, using a sword or a bow to defeat the occasional enemy that gets in your way. The pacing is deliberate, requiring careful observation of trap patterns before you commit to a jump. It feels like a methodical puzzle where one wrong move can send you back to the start.
