About Monster Gate (j)(independent)
Monster Gate was a Japan only independent release for the Game Boy Advance, arriving late in the system's life. It was developed by a small team, and it fits right in with the kind of experimental, dungeon focused games that found a home on the handheld. You won't find a big publisher name attached to it, which gives it a certain rough edged charm.
You control a lone adventurer exploring a massive, multi floor dungeon. Your goal is to fight through each floor, find the exit, and ultimately defeat the boss waiting at the bottom. The game plays out screen by screen; you move from one square room to the next, each one potentially holding monsters, traps, or useful items. Combat is straightforward, relying on your sword, but you also find keys to unlock doors and can collect different pieces of equipment that change your stats. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be steep as you manage your health and resources in a dungeon that doesn't offer many safe rooms. It feels like a methodical test of your endurance and mapping skills.
