About Monopoly (japan)
Monopoly for the Game Boy Color came out in 1999, developed by Tose. It was one of many digital board games you could carry around in your pocket during that era, a time when playing something like this on a small, color screen still felt like a novelty.
You control a token, moving around the digital board by rolling dice. The main goal is to bankrupt your opponents by buying properties, building houses and hotels, and charging rent when they land on your spaces. Signature mechanics include managing your cash and property deeds from a simple menu and engaging in trades with the AI, which can be surprisingly stubborn. The pacing is slow and deliberate, much like the physical game, and the computer opponents offer a decent challenge on the higher difficulty settings. It feels like having a full, portable Monopoly set that never loses any of the pieces.
