Momotarou Densetsu 1-2 came out for the Game Boy Color in 1999, developed by Hudson Soft. It was a time when handheld RPGs were becoming more ambitious, and this compilation of two earlier Famicom titles fit right in. You get a solid, traditional Japanese role playing experience in a portable format, which was a nice thing to have back then.

You control Momotarou, the peach-born hero from folklore, on a quest to defeat the evil Oni. The game plays out screen by screen, with an overhead view for exploration. You walk through towns and fields, talk to villagers for clues, and dive into dungeons and caves where the perspective shifts to a first person view for navigation. Combat is turn based, triggered by random encounters on the map, where you select attack, magic, or item commands for your party. Your main goal is to gather a group of allies, like a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant, and then storm the Oni's island stronghold. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you don't take time to level up your characters. It feels like a straightforward, classic adventure that requires patience and careful planning.
