About Minna No Soft Series : Shanghai
I picked up Minna No Soft Series: Shanghai for the Game Boy Advance back in 2002, a Sunsoft release that fit right in with the handheld's library of accessible puzzle games. It was a time when you could find a quick, thoughtful experience to fill a short bus ride or a quiet evening, and this was one of those titles.
You don't control a character so much as you manipulate tiles on a single screen. The objective is to clear the entire board by matching pairs of identical tiles, but you can only select tiles that are free on at least one side. The signature mechanics involve studying the layered stack of tiles to find available pairs and planning several moves ahead to avoid blocking yourself. The game starts gently but the layouts become more complex, demanding a careful eye and patience. It feels like quietly untangling a knot with your mind.
