About Might And Magic Ii: Gates To Another World (dos)
Might and Magic II: Gates to Another World is a role-playing game released for MS-DOS in 1988. Developed and published by New World Computing, it is the second title in the Might and Magic series and a direct sequel to Secret of the Inner Sanctum. The game is a first-person dungeon crawler set in a fantasy universe, featuring turn-based combat and party-based exploration.
The player controls a custom party of up to six adventurers, pursuing the antagonist Sheltem across the world of CRON to prevent a catastrophic event. Progression involves navigating grid-based, three-dimensional environments from a first-person perspective. Combat is turn-based and initiates at predetermined encounter points, though the specific enemies faced are randomly determined. A core gameplay loop consists of exploring towns and wilderness areas, managing character advancement, and engaging in tactical battles to gain experience and equipment.
Character creation includes selecting from returning classes like Knight and Sorcerer, as well as new additions such as Ninja and Barbarian, with each class tied to specific attributes for effectiveness. Races include humans, elves, dwarves, gnomes, and half-orcs, with certain items and locations restricted by gender, alignment, or race. New systems allow characters to learn skills like mountaineering for traversal or cartography for automated mapping. The party can also hire two non-player companions to aid in combat. The game structure is more quest-driven than its predecessor, with townsfolk providing specific objectives. A notable time mechanic affects gameplay; characters age in real time, which can alter their statistics and eventually lead to death, and some quests require travel between different time periods.
