About Micro Maniacs
I picked up Micro Maniacs on the Game Boy Color back in 2001, a title from Codemasters. It was a time when portable games were really stretching what the little hardware could do, and this one stood out for its concept. You didn't control soldiers or racers; you controlled a group of shrunken kids, each with their own weird power, trying to survive in a backyard that had become a giant, dangerous landscape.
You guide your chosen character through side scrolling levels filled with oversized hazards like puddles, insects, and garden tools. The main goal is to race to the finish, but it's not just about speed; you have to fight the other maniacs along the way. Each character has a unique special attack, like launching a slime ball or firing a laser from their head, which you use to stun or knock out opponents. The pacing is frantic, with constant dodging and attacking, and the difficulty comes from learning the layout of each hazardous screen while managing your attacks. It feels chaotic and silly, a messy brawl where you're just as likely to be taken out by a stray snail as you are by another player.
