About Medarot 5 - Susutake Mura No Tenkousei - Kuwagata Version (japan)

Medarot 5: Susutake Mura no Tenkousei - Kuwagata Version came out in 2001 for the Game Boy Color, developed by Natsume and published by Imagineer. It arrived late in the handheld's life, a time when developers were still squeezing interesting ideas out of the hardware. This version is one of two, the other being Kabuto, following the series tradition of paired releases.

You control a student who has just moved to Susutake Village, and your main goal is to build your reputation by winning Robottle tournaments with your Medarot, a customizable robot. Gameplay splits between exploring the village and its surroundings screen by screen, talking to other kids to get parts or trigger events, and engaging in turn-based battles. A signature mechanic is the Meda-Parts system, where you collect and equip various heads, arms, and legs, each with unique attacks and stats that change your robot's performance in combat. Another is the Action Order system in battles, which lets you see the turn sequence in advance, allowing you to plan your moves strategically to interrupt opponents or set up combos. The pacing is deliberate, with a fair amount of grinding required to gather the best parts for the tougher tournament fights. It feels like a methodical and personal project of building your perfect fighting partner from the ground up.
