About Medarot 4 - Kuwagata Version (japan)

Medarot 4 - Kuwagata Version came out in 2001 for the Game Boy Color, developed by Natsume and published by Imagineer. It arrived late in the handheld's life, a time when developers were pushing the hardware with more complex RPGs. This was the fourth main entry in the series, and like its predecessors, it never saw an official English release.

You control a young boy who commands a customizable robot, or Medarot, in turn based battles. Your main goal is to win the annual Robattle Tournament by defeating other Medarot users. The game plays out screen by screen in a top down view; you explore towns, talk to people, and initiate fights. A signature mechanic is the three part Medarot assembly, where you collect and equip separate parts for the head, arms, and legs, each with unique abilities that change your combat options. Another is the action order system in battle, where you and your opponent secretly select moves for your left and right arms, then watch them play out simultaneously. The pacing is deliberate, with a fair amount of grinding required to gather better parts. Navigating the world and managing your Medarot's loadout gives the experience a tangible, hands on feel.
