About Medarot 2 - Kabuto Version (japan)

Medarot 2 - Kabuto Version came out in 1999 for the Game Boy Color, developed by Natsume and published by Imagineer. It was part of that late 90s wave of monster battling RPGs on handhelds, a time when the genre was really finding its footing on smaller screens. The game never left Japan officially, which made getting a copy feel like finding a piece of hidden hardware history.

You control a young boy who partners with a Medabot, a customizable robot, and the main goal is to win the World Robattle Cup. You explore the world screen by screen, talking to people and triggering turn based battles. The signature mechanics are the part collection and assembly; you find new Medaparts to swap onto your robot, changing its appearance and abilities in fights. Combat itself is grid based, where you and your opponent take turns moving and using your equipped weapons. The pacing is deliberate, with a moderate difficulty that asks you to think about your parts and positioning. It feels like tinkering in a garage, slowly building a unique fighting partner from scattered components.
