Medal of Honor: Underground came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, published by EA Games. It was part of that wave of World War II shooters that were everywhere in the early 2000s, and having one on a handheld felt like a novelty at the time. You play as Manon Batiste, a French Resistance fighter, working to sabotage Nazi operations across various missions. The game plays from an isometric perspective, and you move through levels screen by screen, clearing areas of enemy soldiers. Your main tools are a selection of period weapons like the M1 Garand and the Thompson submachine gun; you collect ammo and health packs to stay in the fight. The objectives are straightforward, usually involving finding key items or destroying specific targets to progress. The pacing is methodical, as you carefully check corners for enemies and manage your limited resources. It can be quite challenging, with enemies that hit hard and respawn in some areas, forcing you to be precise with your shots. Playing it feels like a tense, tactical puzzle where every corner turned could be your last.
