About Medabots Ax : Rokusho Version

Medabots AX: Rokusho Version came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2003, developed by Natsume and published by Imagineer. It was part of that wave of early 2000s games that tried to translate anime licenses into solid portable adventures, and this one focused on the beetle-like Medabot Rokusho. You don't see many games built around a specific supporting character like that, so it always stood out to me on the shelf.

You control a young Medafighter, navigating the world from a top-down perspective, screen by screen. Your main goal is to win the World Robattle Tournament by defeating other Medafighters in turn-based battles. The core of the game is assembling your Medabot; you collect and swap out dozens of parts for its head, arms, legs, and torso, each piece directly affecting its stats and the special attacks it can use in a fight. Outside of battles, you explore towns and routes, talking to people to find new parts or unlock the next tournament match. The pacing is straightforward, but some of the later robattles can get quite difficult if your parts aren't well chosen. It feels like a satisfying puzzle, constantly tinkering with your build to find an advantage.
