Madden 2004 for the Game Boy Advance came out in 2003 from EA Sports. It was part of the wave of sports titles trying to bring a console feel to a handheld, a time when having a full football game in your pocket was still a novelty. The graphics and presentation were scaled down, but it aimed to deliver a complete NFL experience on the small screen.
You control an entire football team, calling plays and executing them on the field. The main goal is to win games, moving your team through a season or just playing a quick match. Two key mechanics were the Playmaker control, which let you adjust receiver routes on the fly before the snap, and the Hit Stick, a defensive move for delivering big tackles. The game's pace is fast, fitting for the hardware, and it could be challenging to master the timing of passes and defensive switches on the small controls. It feels like a surprisingly deep football simulation crammed into a portable format.
